How Music Works - Interactive music theory resource (PDF)

Interactive PDF, Toolkit

This project came from noticing how often music theory is taught as something to memorise rather than understand. I wanted to explore whether foundational ideas — like pitch, rhythm, and time — could be introduced as patterns you learn to recognise, rather than rules you’re expected to remember.
The result is an interactive PDF that focuses on clarity and structure. Instead of a linear lesson or full course, it’s designed as a resource you can dip into, move around in, and return to when something doesn’t quite click.
I treated this as an information design problem more than a teaching one. The emphasis was on breaking complex ideas into small, readable parts, and letting layout, spacing, and visual systems do as much work as the text.
The content is organised into modular sections, with an overview that supports non-linear navigation. Key elements within diagrams are clickable, linking to short explanations or more focused pages. Hover states are used sparingly, only where they help clarify something without interrupting flow.
